History of Mt Mourne School

Mount Mourne School, located in Mooresville, North Carolina, has a rich history dating back 75 years. Its story is deeply intertwined with the educational development of the region.

Consolidation (Early 20th Century): In the early 20th century, as educational reforms and advancements in teaching methods began to shape the American educational landscape, Mount Mourne School, like many other rural schools, underwent changes and consolidations. These efforts aimed to improve educational standards and provide students with better resources and facilities.

Expansion and Modernization (Mid-20th Century): In the mid-20th century, Mount Mourne School underwent significant expansion and modernization to meet the growing educational needs of the community. New buildings were constructed, and the curriculum evolved to offer a broader range of academic and extracurricular opportunities.

Integration and Civil Rights Era (1960s): The 1960s brought about a period of significant change in American education, as well as in the broader societal context. Mount Mourne School, like many other schools in the South, faced challenges related to desegregation and civil rights. It was during this era that efforts were made to ensure equal access to education for all students, regardless of race.

Continued Growth and Transformation (Late 20th Century): In the late 20th century, Mount Mourne School continued to grow and adapt to the evolving needs of its community. The school likely saw changes in teaching methods, curriculum, and infrastructure during this time. Mt Mourne became a district International Baccalaureate school with an enrollment of 500 plus middle school students.

The Iredell school district decided to close the school post CoVid and it was purchased by a family with deep roots to the school. Three generations of the Howard family attended the school including local business man Rick Howard, his mother and his son Brad who serves as the school board chair.

Today, Mount Mourne School, is looking to reopen as a Classical Education charter school which will offer a dynamic educational experience to its students, reflecting the changing landscape of American education. Its history serves as a testament to the enduring commitment to providing quality education to the Mooresville community while adapting to the evolving needs and standards of education over the years.
